Crohn's App : Systems Thinking, UX/ UI Design

The Crohn's app helps people with Crohn's disease manage their symptoms and makes the path to remission easier to navigate with their connected support network and implanted sensor.

Brief:  Create a product ecosystem focusing on an implanted connected sensor for someone with a chronic disease.

Approach:  I focused on empowering my user by helping them keep track of their journey towards remission by creating a support network centered around an implanted connected sensor and app.

Learnings: Systems thinking, System mapping, User Research, User Interface Design

Project length: 3 weeks

01. Crohn's Feedback Loop

01. Crohn's Feedback Loop

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that effects the lining of the digestive tract.  I needed to understand exactly how this disease works as its own system within the entire bodily system, in order to properly design for my user.

02. Research & Interviews

02. Research & Interviews

"Managing my Crohn's is hard, I have to be really concious of what I eat, remember to exercise, and I have to take medication 3 times a day. My symptoms get worse if I don't do these things." - Alex (Crohn's for 5 years)

03. Caregiving Network

03. Caregiving Network

These are the people involved in Alex's Crohn's disease, each playing a specific role in helping Alex manage and reduce his symptoms.

04. Mapping Alex's Journey

04. Mapping Alex's Journey

Alex's journey from trigger to remission is portrayed in this map. He has to take into consideration the food he is eating, the exercise he is getting, and the medication he is taking which all adds to his stress while he is trying to recover.

05. Developing the Product

05. Developing the Product

After developing insights and finding where opportunities lie, I created 3 "how might we" statements to help inspire the value of the product, a connected sensor implanted in the body.

06. Using connected sensors

06. Using connected sensors

From further interviews with Alex, it was clear what functions the connected sensor and app would have in order to help Alex and his caregiving network manage his Crohn's disease.

07. Creating a Mobile app ecology

07. Creating a Mobile app ecology

The family and IBD specialist are able to support Alex by also being connected to the app and having knowledge of what the sensor is emitting. This will help Alex with managing and planning his journey to remission by having his support team involved every step of the way.

08. The crohn's app

08. The crohn's app

Create an account on the Crohn's app to manage your symptoms, keep track of medication, view sensor data, and connect with your caregiving network.

Medication

Medication

Your medication is tracked to make it easier to know which pills you have taken and when you need to take your next set.

Tracking

Tracking

The Crohn's app helps to manage and track stress, exercise, and eating habits to help you set personal goals to help reduce your symptoms.

Sensor

Sensor

The sensor wirelessly sends data in real time to the Crohn's app, alerting you and your doctor of inflammation in your body and the location.

Connect with others

Connect with others

It is easy to connect with your caregiving network and you can control who is able to see your inflammation and tracking. Families are able to encourage healthy eating and exercise through the app.

Notifications

Notifications

The Crohn's app notifies you when the sensor notices upcoming inflammation, to warn you of any pain or discomfort.
