Project length: 4 weeks
What is it?
Bedtime is a connected home lighting system that helps people get to bed earlier by adjusting light color and brightness, influencing the body's circadian rhythm. Bedtime learns the user's behavior, turning off lights at scheduled times to create better sleeping habits.
Let's get to bed earlier with bedtime.
I spoke to 4 people that have trouble getting to bed on time and wanted to dig deep into their relationship and attitudes towards their bed time. I was curious about the difficulty that they face when attempting to get to bed and what they do to prevent or help it.
03. Insights & Opportunity Areas
After synthesizing my findings from my interviews, I developed high level insights related to way that lighting helped people "naturally" feel more relaxed and tired. I then began to see several opportunity areas emerge that I could focus on, in order to create a positive change in people's lives.
04. Brand Identity
I wanted to create a product that could easily fit into any home. I chose black and orange as the primary colors for the brand, to represent darkness and light.
05. Storyboarding and Sketching
After developing a few concepts, I illustrated several scenarios and use cases for bedtime focusing on creating a positive behavior change and sense of accomplishment over time. I then created concept sketches for an in home device
06. In home Device UI
The bedtime device is a wall mounted screen that provides glanceable information about when your lights will start dimming, what lights are on in the house, and how long you have before bedtime that night. This will help you control your lighting system and bedtime.
07. Welcome to the bedtime app
Start using bedtime by purchasing the product, downloading the app and creating an account.
Sync with keeper
Once you have unboxed and set up the bedtime keeper (wall mounted lighting device), sync over wifi with the connected lights in your home.
Connect with apps
After syncing with the bedtime keeper device, connect your calendar, alarms, etc. to help with scheduling bedtime/ wake time and special events!
Easily adjust lighting in any room in your home from your smartphone and device.
Each light will be placed on a timer to begin dimming a few hours before your desired bedtime. Choose which lights automatically dim and turn off, the order of dimming, and intensity.
View what apps and devices the keeper is connected to for easy scheduling of lighting changes.
Bedtime and wake time
Inspired by Apple's Clock App, you can easily adjust when bedtime turns off/ on lights depending on the amount of sleep you would like to get.
Choose when you would like the lights in your home to start dimming to help you become sleepy, in order to get to sleep at the time you've been aiming for.
Bedtime can wake you up by turning on a blue toned light to make it easier for your body get out of bed once awakened. This is especially helpful for users that wake up when it is still dark outside, the light is set on a timer to help the body adjust more fully.
Bedtime tracks your progress and behavior change over time, helping you see when you sleep better and get to bed earlier.
Track your progress
Bedtime helps you reach your goals by providing you with information on how you are improving and getting to bed at the time you want. The app also lets you know how much energy you are using with your lights.
08. Product Packaging
The packaging, unboxing, and set up of the bedtime keeper all play a role in the user's overall out of box experience. Beauty, simplicity, and the natural world are key themes I made sure to include in the product's packaging.
